Top Tips for Exercising with your Baby outdoors this winter
The weather in the UK is about as diverse as its people…but don’t let the winter weather keep you in on the sofa, with a little planning you can still get in shape with a good outdoor workout and all you need is sensible clothing for you, your baby and your Buggy!
Follow these top tips to keep you warm whilst exercising outside this winter:
Layers
The easiest way to be certain that you do not overheat during exercise, or lose too much heat during rest periods is to dress in layers. For power walking outside with your buggy or attending an organized class such as Buggyfit, dress in a vest, t-shirt, tracksuit top, jacket, hat and mitts. Dress your little ones in two more layers than you, you may work up a sweat but baby is just taking in the views! If you use a blanket to cover the buggy, that counts as a layer. As body temp rises, mum can take off layers to allow heat to escape and replace layers during periods of lower intensity. Wear fabrics close to the skin that allows you to sweat such as wool or any synthetic material that wicks moisture away from the skin.
Heads & Hands
It is important to always wear a hat when exercising in the cold as significant amounts of heat can be lost through the head – that goes for mum & baby. Fingers are also sensitive to cold and vulnerable whilst pushing the buggy! Baby’s fingers need covering too – thumb less mitts are recommended as long as your baby will wear them.
Cheeks and lips
Keep mums lips soft out in the elements and babies cheeks safe from the cold, lip balms & creams often double up for both!
Sun Screen
It may be cold, but be prepared for the sun all year round. You may even need your sunglasses or is that just wishful thinking?!
Stay dry
Remember your buggy rain cover. Baby can be kept warm and dry without blocking their view.
Footwear
Avoid slipping by ensuring you wear well fitting trainers with good tread. Check the tread on your buggy tyres too.
Fresh air and fitness are the perfect combination for a clear mind and a happy body. So you can still keep fit right up to Christmas & make it your first new years resolution to suit up and head on out for some exercise!
